A double broken wand will be performed at the meeting July 21, 2011 to pay respects to two Past National Presidents of the Society of American Magicians, Henry “Hank” Moorehouse and William “Bill” Andrews. The loss of these two individuals is a great one to the magic world and will be felt for many years to come.
Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony and to stay for the meeting which will follow. The theme for this evening, true to form for the life these two PNPs lived, is “magic from around the world”.

Abrakadabra 2011
Greetings, I know many of you have been waiting for the synopsis of the 2011 Abrakadabra Convention, but, I can tell you that I have been working on it since arriving home two days ago. How to write a report in a few short words on what was such a great event?
Abrakadabra took place at the Hilton Hotel and from the time we were picked up at the airport to the time we were dropped off for our flights back home, every need we could possibly have was anticipated and met. Under convention Producer, Christian Mejia, a team of over 20 organizers and over 100 committee members ran a fantastic event. More of a magic festival than a traditional convention, the emphasis of the event was on magical shows and on bringing top talent to Mexico for conventioneers as well as for the lay public which attended the evening shows.
The performers were picked up at the airport and their flights, rooms and all food consumption as well as tours and side trips were covered by the committee. We were commenting with each other that we were being treated like royalty. Registration packets consisted of an embroidered briefcase, printed notepad with the Abrakadabra logo along with a pen, lighter, lanyard, credit card type I.D. complete with photograph and additional and assorted sundries. In the briefcase there was also a logo embossed leather case with two decks of cards and a set of domino chips inside, naturally those with the logo as well.
The Abrakadabra program is a 58 page one with a page dedicated to each performer with their photo and bio in addition to the usual pages of the layout of the hotel, schedule of events, list of sponsors, and some historical data on the 14 year old event.
Some of us arrived Sunday the 15th to perform television shows, be a part of press conferences and to promote the event in several other ways; the rest of the performers all arrived by Wednesday the 18th.
The schedule for the convention was a full one so I will tell you that each day started out at 9:00 a.m. and ended way after midnight but conventioneers, talent and organizers alike ended up going to bed in the very early hours of the morning only to wake up a few hours later, exhausted but happy.
Friday, May 20, 2011 started with registration desk opening at 9:00 a.m. to register the performers before the conventioneers rushed to get their badges and registration packets.
ALEXANDER BLADE presented the first lecture on “Image, marketing and publicity”. A fascinating and informative lecture which I recommend highly. Everyone who attended the lecture left with many new bits of information that they said would help them in their own careers.
GUSTAVO MARTINEZ followed at 11:00 with his lecture on “Stage Expression”. Attendees learned about facial expressions, breathing methods and more to help them on being better performers.
GRAN HENRY, well known magician, dealer and mentor presented his “Sponges and a little more” lecture at noon. An icon of the latin magic world, he was well received and the only complaint about the lecture was that he didn’t have more time to present more. Gran Henry is a published author, a man with several decades of experience both on stage and in front of a camera and we were all very thankful to have had the opportunity to have spend a few days with him and to have been there for his lecture.
DEALERS ROOM opened fom 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and the well stocked room was a hub of activity and purchases.
ROCCO SILANO presented his “Stage Presence” lecture from 3:00 to 4:00 and as always, he left everyone wanting much, much more. Rocco is a one of kind performer that is loved by all who meet him and whose talent leaves all who see him speechless, Friday the 20th was no exception.
CLOSE-UP CONTEST followed, also on the Mandrake Stage, from 4:00 to 5:00. The first place prize was an all expense paid trip to perform in Miami, Orlando and Jacksonville in addition to $500 in cash. You can imagine this drew contestants from several different places, but the first place went to a local performer, Iky the Magician.
MARIA IBÁÑEZ, the writer, with the lecture “Patter vs Telling” followed the close-up contest. The lecture was very well received, the lecture CD was quickly distributed and many of those in attendance congratulated me on a lecture which covered many necessary points.
FERNANDO KEOPS, Master Magician, was the featured lecturer in his own “Master Class” presentation. Not even a blink of an eye and the allotted two hours were up with those in attendance clamoring for more.
DEALERS opened again from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. before the dinner bell rang to give us enough time for dinner, a quick change of clothes and the evening show, which started promptly at 10:00 p.m.
MONDAY NIGHT SHOW: Titled Magic Night, the Abrakadabra Stage was full of magic with performances by:

The day came to an end after midnight, however, we remained together sharing magic, stories and camaraderie until the very early hours of the morning, and so came the first official evening to an end.
Saturday, May 21, 2011 the alarm bells went off almost as soon as our heads hit the pillows, but we woke up ready to participate in another full day of magic.
HENRY JR. was the opening lecture of the day. He presented “Parlour Card Magic” and between his finesse and manipulation, he had the audience in total awe!
ARNALDO LEGGI followed him with his “Close-Up” lecture. A comical presentation of a chef complete with a production of assorted food items, including fresh “sushi” in the form of numerous live fish….he made the time fly and kept everyone laughing and clapping. Everyone loved his presentation, for sure!
HIROKI HARA lit up the stage next with “Fire and Manipulation Magic”. Unbelievable talent and presentation by this young performer who has a bright and super future ahead of him.
DEALERS ROOM opened for a little over an hour and conventioneers took advantage of the opportunity to pick up the latest and greatest effects which were available from the vendors.
“HOW TO GROW IN MAGIC AND TRAVEL” as a panel for Q & A followed the lunch break at 3:00 p.m.. The panel was comprised of Maria Ibáñez, Alexander Blade, and Michael Trixx; Henry Jr. graciously agreed to step up when asked to participate on the panel. Maria was asked to serve as moderator on the panel and quickly asked that questions to Rocco Silano and Fernando Keops please be addressed first so that they could be excused to get ready for the close-up show they were scheduled for within the next two hours. Ernesto Planas also excused himself because he was performing at midnight at the gala.
SPIDER followed the panel with his “Spider Clear” lecture. Spider is not just a fantastic lecturer and a great performer, but also a wonderful human being. Given the opportunity to see him, do not hesitate to do so, you will not be disappointed and you will understand why he was so appropriately presented a prestigious Merlin Award by Tony Hassini the same evening at the Saturday Gala.
The Close-Up Show followed quickly after the lecture by Spider and featured the unequalled magic of:

EOLO was the perfect performer to follow the unbelievable magic of the close-up performers. His presentation on “Project Magic” was as good as the project itself is.
DEALERS ROOM opened for another hour as the stage was made ready to receive the contestants for the Stage Contest. First place here was an all expense paid trip to Cancun, complete with a contract to perform.
The Saturday Dinner Gala was a gastronomical delight which consisted of a full meal, complete with a delicious plate of miniature desserts as well as open bar. Performers for the evening were:

The evening started with a video presentation honoring Mandrake for several decades in the magic business. The video, created by the writer, included photos covering his many achievements in the magic trade as well as video messages from many well known names in the magic world including I.B.M. President Rolando Santos and S.A.M. President Mark Weidhaas.
On behalf of Mark Weidhaas, S.A.M. National President, and the many thousands of members around the world, Maria Ibáñez, S.A.M. Past President, presented an S.A.M. engraved wand to Mandrake.
These presentations preceded a very touching and well deserved award from the hand of I.M.S. President, Tony Hassini who appeared on stage, framed by two six foot Merlin images, to recognize Mandrake and to present him with the prestigious Merlin Award. The presentation received a standing ovation and roaring applause.
Tony Hassini also presented, at this time, two additional Merlin Awards to Roberto “Spider” Zenteno in recognition for his talent as a magician, and to the writer, Maria “Merlina” Ibáñez for her contributions and service to the magic community around the world.
Unfortunately, day two of a great convention came to an end officially although many of us went to bed after 4:00 a.m. because the excitement was such that none of us could sleep.
Sunday, May 22, 2011 brought us to the end of the convention but not before a day full of activities and shows.
MAGIC OF THE REPUBLIC was the title given to the panel of Mexican entertainers who shared their expertise from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
MAGO MARTIN followed them with “Magic for the young and not so young” lecture. It was not only well attended and received, but also claimed to be a phenomenal lecture by all who attended.
The YOUTH CIRCUS was the morning show and what a show it was! Children and parents covered the larger part of the room as the entertainers took to the stage. Performances consisted of entertainment by:

DEALERS room opened after the morning show and it would be the next to last time that it would open during the convention. A little smaller as a few of the dealers had left earlier in the day to meet other commitments and to allow for travel time back to their countries, the room was quickly entered by conventioneers as soon as the doors opened.
JANROIS presented his “Great Illusions” lecture and he discussed not just great illusions but the pros and cons of working with them. A worthwhile lecture for many.
ADRIAN GUERRA was the final lecture for the convention. A comedic and well rounded entertainer, it was a wonderful note to end the convention lectures on.
Last call for dealers before the closing show for the convention…..one we didn’t want to see come as we knew it would mean good byes until next year and an all new Abrakadabra Convention.
Father and Son was the theme for the evening show and there were performances by the father and son teams made up of:

Saludos, sé que muchos de ustedes han estado esperando la sinopsis de la Convención de 2011 Abrakadabra, pero les puedo decir que he estado trabajando en él desde que llegue a casa hace dos días. Cómo escribir un informe en pocas palabras cortas de lo que fue un gran evento?
Abrakadabra se llevó a cabo en el Hotel Hilton y desde el momento en que nos recogieron en el aeropuerto hasta el momento en que fuimos dejados para nuestros vuelos de vuelta a casa, todas las necesidades que podríamos tener fueron previstas y arregladas. Bajo la produccion de Christian Mejia, un equipo de más de 20 organizadores y más de 100 miembros del grupo, se produjo un evento fantástico. Más un festival de magia que una convención tradicional, el énfasis del evento fue en los shows de mágia y en traer los mejores talentos a México para convenciones, así como para el público laicos que asistieron a shows por la noche.
Los intérpretes fueron recibidos en el aeropuerto y sus vuelos, habitaciones y todo el consumo de alimentos, así como excursiones y viajes laterales estaban cubiertos por el comité. Estábamos comentando entre nosotros que estabamos siendo tratados como la realeza. Los paquetes de inscripción consistían en un maletín bordado, el bloc de notas impreso con el logotipo de Abrakadabra junto con una pluma, ligero cordón, identificación de tipo de tarjeta de crédito completo con fotografías y artículos diversos adicionales y variados. En la maleta también había un estuche de cuero con logotipo en relieve cib dos barajas de cartas y un conjunto de fichas de dominó en el interior, por supuesto los que tenian el logotipo también.
El programa Abrakadabra es un libro de 58 paginas con una página dedicada a cada artista con su foto y biografía, además de las páginas habituales de la distribución del hotel, el calendario de eventos, lista de patrocinadores, y algunos datos históricos sobre los 14 años del evento.
Algunos de nosotros llegamos el domingo día 15 para llevar a cabo programas de televisión, formar parte de las conferencias de prensa y para promover el evento en varias otras maneras, el resto de los artistas intérpretes o ejecutantes llegaron el miércoles día 18.
El calendario de la convención estaba bien completo asi que le diré que cada día comenzó a las 9:00 am y terminaba después de la medianoche, pero los congresistas, el talento y los organizadores por igual terminamos yendo a la cama en las primeras horas de la mañana sólo para despertar a un par de horas más tarde, agotados pero felices.
Viernes, 20 de mayo 2011 se inició con la apertura de registro de escritorio a las 9:00 am para registrar los artistas antes de que los convencionistas se apresuraran a recuperar sus identificaciones y paquetes de inscripción.
ALEXANDER BLADE presentó la primera conferencia sobre “Imagen, mercadeo y publicidad”. Una lectura fascinante e informativo que recomiendo altamente. Todos los que asistieron a la conferencia salieron con muchos nuevos bits de información que se dijo que los ayudaría en sus propias carreras.
GUSTAVO MARTINEZ siguio a las 11:00 con su conferencia sobre “Expresión Escenica”. Los asistentes aprendieron acerca de las expresiones faciales, la respiración y muchos métodos más para ayudar a ser mejores artistas.
GRAN HENRY, bien conocido mago, comerciante y mentor presentó su conferencia “esponjas y un poco más”, al mediodía. Un icono del mundo latino magia, fue bien recibido y la única queja acerca de la conferencia fue que no tenía más tiempo para presentar más. Gran Henry es un autor publicado, un hombre con varias décadas de experiencia tanto en el scenario como delante de una cámara y todos estábamos muy agradecidos de haber tenido la oportunidad de pasar unos días con él y de estar allí durante su conferencia .
SALA DE CONCESIONARIOS abrió de 1:00-15:00 y la habitación estaba bien surtid, fue un centro de actividad y compras.
ROCCO SILANO presentó su “presencia en el escenario” conferencia 03:00-04:00 y como siempre, dejó todo el mundo queriendo mucho, mucho más. Rocco es un artista intérprete o ejecutante que es amado por todos los que lo encuentran y cuyo talento déjà a todos los que lo ven sin palabras, el viernes 20 no fue la excepción.
CLOSE-UP CONCURSO siguio, también en el escenario Mandrake, de 4:00 a 5:00. El primer premio fue un viaje todo pagado para actuar en Miami, Orlando y Jacksonville, además de $ 500 en efectivo. Usted puede imaginarse esto atrajo participantes de diferentes lugares, pero el primer premio lo recibio a un artista local, Iky el Mago.
María Ibáñez, quien escribe, con la conferencia “Rutina vs Narracion” siguio de cerca el concurso. La conferencia fue muy bien recibida, el CD conferencia se distribuyó con rapidez y muchos de los asistentes me felicitaron por una conferencia que abarca muchos puntos necesarios.
FERNANDO KEOPS, Mago Maestro, fue el conferencista que nos presento su “Master Class” de presentación. Ni siquiera un abrir y cerrar de ojos y las dos horas asignadas se fueron dejando a los asistentes clamando por más.
CONCESIONARIOS abrieron de nuevo 8:00-9:00 antes que la campana de la cena sonó para darnos el tiempo suficiente para la cena, un rápido cambio de ropa y el espectáculo nocturno, que comenzó puntualmente a las 10:00
LUNES EN LA NOCHE SHOW: Bajo el título Noche Mágica, el escenario Abrakadabra estaba llena de magia con las actuaciones de:

El día llegó a su fin después de la medianoche, sin embargo, nos quedamos juntos compartiendo la magia, los cuentos y la camaradería hasta las primeras horas de la mañana, y así llegó la noche oficial a su fin.
Sábado, 21 de mayo 2011 la alarma de las campanas se fueron casi tan pronto como la cabeza toco las almohadas, pero nos despertamos dispuestos a participar en otra jornada llena de magia.
HENRY JR. fue la conferencia de apertura del día. Presentó “Cartomagia de Salon” y entre su finura y la manipulación, tenía al público en asombro total!
ARNALDO LEGGI lo siguió con su “Close-Up”. Una presentación cómica de un chef completa con una producción de alimentos variados, incluyendo frescos “sushi” en forma de numerosos peces vivos …. Que hizo la marcha del tiempo fuera rapidamente y mantuvo a todos riendo y aplaudiendo. Todo el mundo amo su presentación, seguro!
HIROKI HARA iluminó el escenario con “Fuego y manipulación mágica”. Talento increíble y la presentación de este joven artista que tiene un futuro brillante y super por delante de él.
CONCESIONARIOS habrieron un poco más de una hora y congresistas aprovecharon la oportunidad para recoger los efectos más recientes y que estaban disponibles por los vendedores.
“CÓMO CRECER EN LA MAGIA Y VIAJES” , un panel de Q & A seguido del almuerzo a las 3:00 pm. El panel estuvo compuesto por María Ibáñez, Alexander Blade, y Michael Trixx, Henry Jr. amablemente accedió a aumentar cuando se le pidio participar en el panel. A María se le pidió servir como moderadora en el panel y rápidamente pidió que las preguntas a Rocco Silano y Fernando Keops por favor, se hicieran primero para que pudiesen ser excusados para estar listos para el show de close-up que estaba previsto en las próximas dos horas. Ernesto Planas también se excusó porque estaba actuando a la media noche en la gala.
SPIDER siguio el panel con su conferencia “Spider Clear”. Spider no es sólo un conferencinsta excepcional y un gran intérprete, sino también un ser humano maravilloso. Dada la oportunidad de verlo, no dude en hacerlo, no se sentirán decepcionados y comprenderá por qué estaba tan adecuadamente presentado el prestigioso premio Merlín de Tony Hassini la misma noche en la gala del sábado.

EOLO es el intérprete perfecto para seguir la magia increíble de los artistas intérpretes de magia de cerca. Su presentación en el “Proyecto Magia” era tan bueno como el proyecto es en sí mismo.
LA SALA DE CONCESIONARIOS abrió una hora más que el escenario estaba siendo preparado para recibir a los concursantes para el Concurso de escenario. El primer lugar aquí fue un viaje con todos los gastos pagados a Cancún, con un contrato para llevar actuar.
La Cena de Gala del Sabado fue una delicia gastronómica que consistía en una comida completa, con un delicioso plato de postres en miniatura, así como barra libre. Los artistas de la noche fueron:

La noche comenzó con una presentación en video en honor a Mandrake jpor sus varias décadas en el negocio de la magia. El video, creado por la escritora, incluia fotos que cubrian sus muchos logros en el comercio de magia, así como mensajes en vídeo de muchos nombres bien conocidos en el mundo mágico, como IBM Presidente Rolando Santos y SAM Presidente Mark Weidhaas
En nombre de Marl Weidhaas, S.A.M. Presidente Nacional, y los muchos miles de miembros alrededor del mundo, María Ibáñez, SAM Ex Presidente, presentó una varida de S.A.M. grabada a Mandrake.
Estas presentaciones precedieron a una muy emotivo y bien merecido premio de la mano de IMS Presidente, Tony Hassini que apareció en el escenario, enmarcado por dos imágenes de seis pies de Merlin, para reconocer aMandrake y presentarle el prestigioso premio Merlín. La presentación recibió una gran ovación y aplausos.
Tony Hassini presentó también, en este momento, otros dos premios Merlín a Roberto “Spider” Zenteno, en reconocimiento por su talento como mago y a la escritora, María “Merlina” Ibáñez por su contribución y servicio a la comunidad mágica de todo el mundo .
Por desgracia, el segundo día de una gran convención llegó a su fin oficialmente, aunque muchos de nosotros fuimos a la cama después de las 4:00 am porque la emoción era tal que ninguno de nosotros podía dormir.
Domingo, 22 de mayo 2011 nos trajo hasta el final de la convención, pero no antes de un día lleno de actividades y espectáculos.
MAGIA DE LA REPUBLICA fue el título dado al grupo de artistas mexicanos que compartieron sus conocimientos de 10 a.m.-11 a.m.
MAGO MARTIN los siguió con la conferencia “La magia de los jóvenes y no tan jóvenes”. Fue no sólo una buena asistencia, pero también afirmarpm que fue una conferencia extraordinaria todos los asistentes.
Show Infantil Circo fue el show de la mañana y que espectáculo fue! Los niños y los padres cubrian la mayor parte de la habitación mientras los artistas subieron al escenario. Actuaciones consistieron de entretenimiento por:

Lasala de CONCESIONARIOS abrió después de el show de la mañana y sería el la penultima vez que se abriria durante la convención. Un poco más pequeño ya que algunos de los distribuidores se habían ido anteriormente en el día para cumplir con otros compromisos y permitir el tiempo de viaje de regreso a sus países, la sala se lleno rápidamente por convencionistas tan pronto como se abrieron las puertas.
JANROIS presentó su conferencia “Grandes ilusiones” y no hablo sólo de grandes ilusiones, pero tambien de los pros y los contras de trabajar con ellos. Una lección que valio la pena para muchos.
ADRIAN GUERRA fue la última conferencia de la convención. Un actor cómico y bien redondeado, se trataba de una nota maravillosa para poner fin a la convención
Última llamada para los concesionarios antes de el espectáculo de clausura de la convención … .. uno que no quería ver venir como sabíamos que significaría despedidas hasta el próximo año y un convenio nuevo de Abrakadabra.

Al Callus has performed stage, television, parlor, walkaround
and street magic for many, many years. He first introduced
his Magical Pitchman act in Times Square, New York City and has performed it hundreds of times for military both here in the United States and abroad. This is a lecture/performance you won’t want to miss!
